Jackpot: LED components even brighter and more efficient

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors presents its LED product portfolio with ceramic conversion at the CES

Brightly lit casinos and oversized, colorful billboards - Las Vegas is the “City of Lights” in the USA. Light is also a topic at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), which will be taking place from January 10 to 13, 2012. At the CES, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will be presenting its product range of LED components with ceramic converters for application in the projection and automobile headlamps segment: these LEDs offer a much higher degree of brightness and an extremely homogeneous beam pattern.

The conversion technology has already proven to be successful, in particular with regard to the generation of white light by means of LED. However, this option also exists for the generation of colored light. In combination with the new OSRAM UX:3 chip technology, new ceramic converters provide increased temperature stability, a higher degree of LED brightness and a more homogeneous beam pattern,. With the ceramic converter C2–technology, and the combined benefits for the colors yellow and green, OSRAM components have succeeded in attaining 25 to 30 percent more internal efficiency. Hence, with converted green, one is able to attain a doubling of the brightness, compared to conventionally generated green. With white automotive LEDs, even higher brightness levels of approx. 50 percent can be reached.

Bright and homogeneous light for projectors and headlights
The semiconductor manufacturer from Regensburg never ceases to expand its portfolio of products developed on the platform of ceramic conversion. At the CES, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors will be presenting the OSRAM OSTAR Compact LED for projectors as well as the OSRAM OSTAR Headlamp Pro and OSLON Black Flat for automobile headlamps, which will be available with ceramic conversion as of 2012.

The results of the LED with ceramic conversion are truly impressive: in a projector, for instance, the increase in brightness of the green light diodes has a particularly powerful impact on the system’s overall brightness. This is because a large share of green light is required for the generation of white light. The OSRAM OSTAR Compact One-Chip LED with a ceramic converter achieves 410 lm at a wavelength of 553 nm. When used in a projector, this increases the system’s efficiency and brightness by approximately 30 percent, yet without any change in the system. It is now possible to manufacture projectors of the same size but with better performance, or conversely, projectors that have the same performance as previous models, but with reduced energy consumption.

Thanks to ceramic conversion, LED components for front headlamps are now also able to offer a high light output, a homogeneous light distribution and a particularly impressive contrast ratio, which results in a positive impact on road safety. With a rate of 2.3 W power consumption and 700mA operating current, the OSLON Black Flat achieves a luminous flux of 190 lm. It can be operated with currents of up to 1.2 A. The high-performance LED OSRAM OSTAR Headlamp Pro, which is equipped with two to five chips, can attain levels of up to 280 lm per chip. Both products are manufactured in UX:3 chip technology and are available in white. Additional LED components with ceramic conversion, for use in the automotive segment, will follow.
