Any size you want - 102-Inch LCD Backlight

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, a leader in LED technology, today unveiled another industry first in display applications at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2006 International Symposium. Its latest achievement is a LED illumination source suitable for backlighting a 102-inch LCD TV or panel, making it the largest LED backlighting source ever built in the world.

OSRAM's unique 102-inch LED backlight module features more than 1,732 OSRAM Golden DRAGON ARGUS LEDs and the company's proprietary Thin-Film and ThinGaN (indium gallium nitride) technologies. The result is an unparalleled luminance on diffuser of 6,000 nits (cd/m2) of brightness that generates a vivid color gamut exceeding National Television System Committee (NTSC) requirements by 110 percent for up to 50,000 hours (or approximately 6 years, 24 hours, seven days a week). For the best backlighting in display applications, OSRAM's Golden DRAGON ARGUS LED includes the patented ARGUS lens which has been specially designed for high efficiency backlight applications. A typical application places four Golden DRAGON ARGUS LEDs, (2 green, 1 red and 1 blue) in a tight diamond arrangement to form the building blocks for infinitely scalable, high-intensity, fully color mixed backlighting systems. The wall size 102-inch LCD backlight at SID 2006 demonstrates that OSRAM's solution can be scaled to any size screen a customer wants while still providing high brightness and efficiency. This is critical for commercial and industrial large display applications.

OSRAM's Golden DRAGON ARGUS LEDs enable slim (40 mm) backlights with greater than 85 percent uniformity over the entire surface of the backlight. The 102-inch backlight draws only 1.500 watts (W) of electrical power, are vibration and shock-resistant, and provide instant on and off features without the need for ventilation fans.

Large displays, from OSRAM's 32- to 102-inch prototypes backlit with LEDs, do not need active cooling, even at high outputs. They are both mercury-free and lead-free, complying with Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS).
